So as the old saying goes, oh i’m not sure about swapping to a steel tray, their so heavy.
Well we’re going to put that myth to bed. (with our trays anyway!)
Today at the shop we did a little practical test, to get the scales out and check the weight of one of our standard custom ute trays versus the standard tub style side tray we take off, and the results are surprising.
First we weighed a current 2017 model stock tray we had lying around. Also note there are no lights, or rear factory steel bumper which would add a few extra kilos.
With the tub coming in at 159kg. Time to try the other.
Here we have a standard size Shannons Engineering tray. The flooring we use is 5mm aluminium tread plate which comes in at 43kg, + 0.5kg of paint give or take and about 3kg for the aluminium mudguards & flaps bringing the total weight 159kg.
Surprisingly our steel trays basically match the weight of the genuine style side tub tray! No need to upgrade your suspension to compensate – with our trays anyway!
So if you’re ever thinking of changing over to a steel tray, look no further than a Shannons Engineering tray. We manufacture our trays from Australian made steel and are made to order. Our manufacturing process involves keeping all the tube steel fully enclosed to prevent rusting out from the inside and seam seal all our joints to prevent water ingress, Our trays use a combination of steel and aluminium both combined for strength, rust prevention and to keep the weight down. And that’s just the start.
